La Brea Tar Pits

Watch this once-in-a-century project come alive in video narrated by Jodie Foster

Beneath L.A.’s Miracle Mile is the real miracle.

A site like no other where science and wonder join together. A time machine and portal to worlds both old and new. The reimagined La Brea Tar Pits will be one of the most consequential cultural and scientific sites in the world.

We are seeking visionary philanthropic partners to help us reimagine the entire La Brea Tar Pits experience—what it can teach us, and how it can Illuminate our shared future. Now is the time to reimagine what the Tar Pits can mean to the world.

The Samuel Oschin Global Center for Ice Age Research

The Samuel Oschin Global Center for Ice Age Research will be the intellectual core of La Brea Tar Pits, studying how ancient ecosystems responded to climate change and mass extinction, and what those lessons mean for us today.

A new entry on Wilshire Boulevard will define a welcoming threshold between La Brea’s Hancock Park and the city, providing greater visibility to the museum and all that it offers.

An elegant walking path will connect the Park to the museum, giving visitors easy access to the museum’s main entrance and new vistas for enjoying the Park.

With an expansive, glass-fronted gallery facing the Park, the renovated museum will share its marvels and connect to our communities and city like never before.

Fossil mounts in lifelike poses create three main Ice Age L.A. scenes: an entrapment event; species drinking from a watering hole; and a mammoth fight.

The new museum will share many stories. They will be personal, imaginative, community-oriented, spiritual, factual, visual, and more!

The Ice Age Hall will journey through time and two tree groves, including a juniper oak woodland and a closed cone pine forest.
